Lake Placid Village is in Essex county in Northeast NY about 145 miles north of Albany. It is located on both the Mirror Lake and Lake Placid. It is also located at the foot of Whiteface mountain which is 4867 ft high. The altitude of the village is 1864 ft. Close by is Mt. Marcy which is the highest mountain in New York State at 5344 ft.
The village offers both summer and winter recreation. There are golf courses, ski centers, bridal paths and hiking trails in the vacinity.
The village was founded by Melvil Dewey in 1895. He invented the Dewey decimal system used in the public libraries.
